-  Introduction about room and function

Vision for Committee
Parent Advisory group needed to help run the school
-Perspective of what to give back to parents
Myspace.com meeting is a good example
-Advice from a parent group is what we need in the school to make students successful
        - Co-leaders from group – to be selected w/principal ex-officio
        - Community Interaction

What role do you see this committee having?
Kathy – How should this be similar/different from PTA?
Vic - No real difference  - PTA specific roles,
        Not as a fundraising role
Role I see as an extra set of eyes and ears to give principal
Not as a committee to complain about teachers
        Provides information to parents about the school;
        How we develop curriculum
        How we evaluate teachers
        How does a school run

Encourage that parents need to be made aware of daily announcements
Provide an area on website for parents specifically
Newsletters for parent of information about school
Problem with cost of newsletter mailings
        Possible solution – Website newsletter
Streamline Website? Make it more user friendly?
Using Talon staff or other students in webpage activities?

How does the community see the school? School issues
Dances?
        Principal moral leader
-       inappropriate dancing cannot occur
o       Video content at dances inappropriate
o       Language for karaoke inappropriate aka “B***job”
§       School currently performing at a “C-“
·       Room for improvement

-       Dialogue needed between students, administration
o       Not to the point of canceling dances

Kathy – California Case – First hand knowledge
-       Music dictates type of dancing
-       Make rules that can be enforced and make sure they are enforced

Can students be taught to dance in other ways?
“Dance Lessons” or group dance at the beginning of the dance?

If students are repeat offenders policy of “Two and go”
-       Parents need to be notified
o       What should be done if parents cannot be reached????
Multiple activities at dance
-       Movies in the auditorium???
o       Chaperone issues – should more parents become involved??
-more teachers at dances

        How do you want feedback?
       Email?
        Informal Communication
                DANCES issue
                Minimum burden
Parents talking about issues within a high school
How can we minimize the burden on principal to set agenda?

Co-leaders will be needed to help set agenda/topics for meeting

Environment/setting of meetings as important as a venue for discussion
If any one of us could sit down with eight other parents and just talk we could come up with other questions

Looser structure could assist in coming up with issues to help committee.

        Possible effects of measures
                - Clamping down on kids could cause fewer kids to come to dances
                        - This is not what we want to happen.
Dance team at football games?  Appropriate???
        No coach – no advisor
        consistency throughout

Educate kids on appropriate actions
o       Respect person dating
§       Social skills
Most recent dance
-       rules did not hurt attendance
-       Feed back one was ok
o       Appropriate action
o       Another Bert – Gabe his son said “Dad started out lights on nobody danced
§       Lights off people danced.
§       Music conducts how the dance will go
§       Logical conclusion – what should we do?
o       Educate how  someone should act at a dance
o       Teacher reinforce actions at school
§       HOW???
-       Alcohol not at dances rules reinforced
o       Consistency with rules

-       Younger kids don’t like the clampdown where upperclassmen appreciate it
-       What is the light levels at the dance
-       Impact of teachers on students in terms of respect and modeling behavior.
-       Identify key values so kids are not driven away
o       Student involved with decisions
o       Small steps in finding solutions “ how to dance”
§       Small student group to lead dances?
o       Provide alternatives
-       Principals and police chief decisive
o       Take all year to find solution
§       If solved by next year it would be a success
-       California – Dances cancelled
o       Posted appropriate dress on website
o       Parent forums
§       Few things to start implement
-       How do students react to teacher in a non-academic setting?
o       React with respect if teacher is known or known of otherwise similar reaction to authority figure
-       Tough decision may need to be made if actions continue
o       In California after canceling dance, kids came in line
-       Parents say no drug, no sex, no alcohol but some still do it
o       Remember kids brains are not fully developed until 25
-       Maybe we can broaden activities, maybe we could have an advertised forum on something like dances?
Logical next step for dance
-       Have chaperones deal with it
o       Are classes needed?
o       Could older students be used to help other students model; behavior?
§       How can we change the culture?
-       Senior have a $ stake
o       Could that be used as leverage
o       Should be done with a “feather duster not a sledge hammer”
o       Video Camera of the kids dancing
§       Make it a positive for “senor video” with the understanding that it is still video evidence.
-
7:18 Closing meeting
Where do you want to go?  Themes????
Structured meetings in the beginning of the year
Should allow a flexible enough forum to have topics carry over
Changes in regards to how students effected for college entry
Tardiness – Still need to get issues squared away
Clear parking lots in 15 minutes.
-       Tardiness to parking permits
February – Attorney road show at Myspace.com
        Access restricted
        Geared towards parents
Talk about options that parents may or may not be aware of

March meeting dating violence

Myspace/Themed meeting vs. committee meetings???

Same night having a core meeting as well as community awareness.
How do we get the word out to the community?????
Public access as well as school meeting????

My space – how does it work?  How can it be monitored?

        Athletics – issues thoughts?
